"Screeching in" refers to a Newfoundland tradition where non-Newfoundlanders, or "Come From Aways" (CFAs), are initiated into the local culture by a ceremony that involves reciting a specific phrase, tasting Newfoundland Screech rum, kissing a codfish, and sometimes eating bologna. This ceremony bestows the title of "Honorary Newfoundlander" on the participant.
